Adventure. It’s the word we live by here at Rugged Van Rentals. Our desire is to spread that word and give people the means to live it out. In 2018, we introduced what no one else ever has, true 4×4 adventure van rentals capable of taking you and all your friends safely into the backcountry with all your gear. Now we are stepping up our game. We are adding overlanding trucks to our fleet!

What is Overlanding?

What is overlanding? Glad you asked! Overlanding is a relatively new phenomenon in the United States. Think of it as a combination of camping and off-roading. While it may be new to Americans, overlanding has been popular on other continents for decades. Overlanding has its beginnings in the Australian outback, where early overland routes were formed to facilitate intracontinental travel and trade. It evolved first from horseback and then to rail, before it was finally mechanized for motorcycles and automobiles.

Nowadays, overlanding is done more for recreation than necessity. Sometimes referred to as “car camping,” it goes much deeper than that. Overlanding is built upon the spirit of adventure and self-reliance. Travelling the wilderness with only the essential gear for whatever you might encounter. An overland trip might be a simple off-the-grid weekend, or a months-long excursion. But what truly separates overlanding from camping, is the role your vehicle plays in the adventure.

Hannibal had his elephants, Lewis and Clark had their canoes, Rugged has its Chevy Colorados!

Overlanding enthusiasts all over the world agree, if you want comfort and true back-country capability, the Chevy Colorado is the perfect platform!  With a large comfortable interior that seats 5, you have plenty of room for your closest friends. And while on the road, the powerful and reliable 3.6L V6 engine with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, will easily get you anywhere you need to go.

We have given our Chevrolet Colorado Z71 4×4’s some upgrades! First we have given them a 3” lift to get a little extra ground clearance. Next, we added the fun stuff! A Yakima Outpost HD bed rack topped with a Yakima Skyrise Tent (although if you want to remove the tent and replace it with a ski box, bike racks, or kayak racks we will let you). In the truck bed we dropped in a Decked system set of drawers. This allows us to store a dual burner cook stove, pots and pans, plates, bowls, cups, silverware, lanterns, set of 4 small chairs and a small table, first aid kit, and still leave you with some extra room. Also in the truck bed you will be supplied with an extra-large Otterbox cooler that will keep your food cold for days! Attached to the Yakima rack is a set of 2 Rotopax 2-gallon water packs, as well as a set of recovery boards just in case the trail gets muddy.

Just like with your vans, we want you to get off the blacktop and back to where the fun is! (We do restrict travel to maintained dirt roads such as forest service roads and county roads. We do not allow our trucks to be used for “rock crawling” or extreme off-roading). Take our trucks out for some backcountry camping. Take them on your fishing or hunting trip. Take them for your mountain biking trip. Take them for your kayaking trip. And if you are headed up for a ski trip or snowshoeing in the winter, what better way than in a capable 4×4? Find your adventure and let us get you there.
